Only 16 2009 school days to go!
Last week we had a blast at Whenua Iti. Hope you've checked out Laura's movie. This week is a homework free week due to them looking after me on the Flying Kiore.

When you are at their mercy you've got to have some sort of bargaining power... homework was it.
Looking ahead to this week our ot of class highlights are the Fire station visit today, the Talent Quest on Wednesday morning and buddy time on Friday.
Hope you are able to make it to the Parent Helpers' Thank You on Thursday morning - looking forward to seeing you there.
Maureen Ryan will be taking the class programme tomorrow and Wednesday morning while I am at a Syndicate planning meeting and Interactive Whiteboard training.

Our Athletic Sports Day was a great day for all concerned. If you are in school this week, check out the photo story on the window of the classroom.

Today we had Ross Bailey in to talk to the two Intermediate classes about fire safety. He was excellent value and I am sure the students will want to discuss the messages and video from today's session. Next week we are going to be following up on this talk with a visit to the station. We will be walking down and back. Could you please write in your child's home work diary to let us know whether they have your permission to go. Also, as we will be starting the return trip back to school at 2:30 pm, you may wish your child to come straight home after the visit rather than return to school. Please indicate in their diary if this is the case otherwise they will come back to school first.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) we are heading off to enjoy a day of individual and team building challenges and activities at Whenua Iti. It promises to be a great day. We got an email today from the activity manager asking us to add a rain coat to the list of things to remember as lately there have been passing showers of rain every day.

News and Home Learning tasks Term 4, Week 5

Our students are using the key competencies to live, learn, work, and contribute as active members of their learning community. We are looking forward to another great week to extend our thinking, develop our use of language and symbols, learn more about managing self, relating to others in a positive way and participating and contributing in a variety of activities.

Speaking of participating, it is good to see students are preparing for the forthcoming talent quest. This is a time for other students to develop a risk taking attitude and approach - feel the fear and do it anyway! This event is always a highlight of the fourth term, so hope you can make it to see some of our talent on display.
Please remember to get the Whenua Iti notices back as soon as possible so transport can be sorted.

News and Homework tasks Term 4, Week 3

A short week this week with two special highlights.
The first one is the school band taking part in the Primary School Band Rockfest on Tuesday. The purpose of this event is to develop confidence, networks and inspiration - it is not about competition. The programme includes opportunities for each group to perform 2 or 3 songs and Waimea College music students will be attending to give demonstrations and workshops on specific instruments. It promises to be a great day for all.
The second highlight is the Moutere Intermediate students meeting for a day of fun team building activities designed to get them interacting and problem solving together. This event is on Wednesday and runs from 11 am through to 2:30 pm. We will start with the team building games followed by lunch on the beach at approximately 1 pm. Rock/sand sculptures and a swim (weather permitting) will round off the day.

We would love to hear your thoughts on our creativity extender - What if human brains could be transplanted into other bodies? We would love it if you added to our brainstorm by leaving a comment on the blog.

Kaitlyn's visit to California

Hi everyone! I have had a great time in California it is very hot over here and one day it was 41 degrees Celsius. It was REALLY hot. We went to 6 flags zoo / theme park which was a lot of fun. Some of my favourite animals were shouka the orca, the dolphins and a lot more. My favourite rides were the cobra rollercoaster and another one, that I can’t remember its name. We also did a lot of shopping at the malls, it was great fun. I met my old dog named Shasta, she is doing great. We have a key to the swimming pool so we go in there once or twice a day. The time difference puts you off quite a bit. It is 5 hours difference between here and new Zealand. It is also a day behind. But you get use to it after a while. Here is a picture of my great grandma who is 92 years old, a girl who lives next door and myself. We were in a cold hot tub to cool down. Not to heat up. Like we need that! Miss you all, see you next term.

Week 7 already! Time sure flies when you're having fun.
Last week certainly ended on a fun note. We started the day filming our Spanish language movies (which should be ready to go up on our language wiki by the end of this week), had some fun with balloon volley ball and relay games, technology was next on the timetable and after lunch we watched the Room 5 performance assembly. There were some very entertaining items from each class. It was a great way to end the day.
The GATE Reading group met for an hour after lunch and discussed books they had read with war as a setting or theme. Some of the books discussed and recommended as good reads were: Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, The Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan, Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. These books have given the students an insight into what life is like for those caught in a war zone. We read the story The Wall by Eve Bunting as a group. It is a touching tale, with beautiful muted watercolor illustrations by Richard Himler. In the story the boy's feelings of loss for a grandfather he never knew, and his father's quiet remark, "He was just my age when he was killed," brought home the impact of war on families whose lives have been changed by the loss of a loved one. there were several other characters, each impacted in a different way through the war. A simple but powerful tale, well worth reading.

Wa hey! I have read all your homework arguments and, yes you have convinced me - this week is a homework free week. Congratulations. I was most impressed with your progress and achievements in persuasive writing. Your work shows you have learnt the correct structure, format and effective language tools of persuasion. There were some pretty wild exaggerations, lots of emotive language and good rhetorical questions to get readers thinking. Well done Room 7 - I guess I'm going to be in trouble now because you know how to use the tricks of the trade when it comes to persuasion! Parents be warned!

Thursday the 11 of June all of Room 7 went to a workplace that they have an interest in and might want to do that kind work in the future. We did this for work experience as a part of our Careers study. One business gave the school a $25 book voucher to say thanks for the work done by Hayden. Way to go Hayden!

What a work experince

Every body was buzzing as it was the day before our class work experince. We had been planning for what seemed like months. Mrs Hosie (our teacher ) thought it would be a good way for getting us ready for the real world and it was ... this is what happened. We each set off for the day at our own pace some with our parents others being taken by someone in a business.
As we set off the thrill began.
As I arrived the doors welcomed me from the cold streets into the calm and quiet veterinary clinic.
All you could hear were the fish tanks humming to themselves and cats and dogs who obviously did not want to be there.

That was my welcoming as you can imagine the others had a different welcome - some were welcomed by the sound of preschool children, others by policemen, business people or shoppers.
When we shared our experiences the following day everyone had learned valuable lessons and had a great time in their different work environment

Papa Ra's warm welcome

Papa Ra visited the school for a week and in the time he was here he got a great idea of what our school was like and how it worked. The main difference he noticed was the learning environment. One thing Papa Ra said was "Most of our teaching is outside in the real world". The main language has become, over the years, English, and a strong focus of some of his work is encouraging Cook Island Maori. There is even a Maori speech competition!

He not only visited the school but also had an opportunity to go to the Rippa Rugby Tournament in Motueka. He was noting down the rules as rippa had recently been introduced in his school, Nikao Maori School in Rarotonga. After seeing the game in action he thought he would have to tweak the rules to make the game faster for his pupils.

Papa Ra was warmly welcomed at school and the farewell was very sad. When his two week visit was cut short to one week following a death in Papa Ra's family it was still a valuable experience.

Room 7's Love of Sport!!!

Room 7's love of sport has grown so much over the year. It is great to see people getting out there and being all they can be! Students in Room 7 participate in a wide range of different sports. The students participate in soccer, basketball, gymnastics, rugby , cricket, swimming, netball, motocross and many more.

I interviewed Lucy.S to hear about her thoughts on the sports she plays over the weekend:
She said " I play Netball and Miniball and I really enjoy miniball because you can get in their faces and support each other and for Netball I am good at defending and guarding the goal."

I also interviewed Jake to hear about his thoughts,
He said " I do Motocross, swimming, cricket and Rugby but my favourite has to be motocross because it is fun and I think I am good at it."

It was great to hear about peoples thoughts on Sports. It is always awesome to see people getting out there and supporting each other!

Dancing at the disco

WOW the DISCO went great! EVERY ONE came with their dancing shoes on. The theme was black and white and every one came to the party dressed in amazing black and white outfits. It was a great night for everyone.

The disco just gets better and better each time we have a one, we owe our thanks to the House Leaders for this great disco. They gave up their own time for us, so make sure you thank them. They did a great job at organizing the activities, food and songs as well as keeping us under control (that can be hard some times). And the songs were much better than last year as they had a better beat for dancing. Thanks House Leaders, we appreciate your efforts.

Two short weeks coming up - this week due to Teachers’ Only Day and next week due to Queen’s Birthday weekend. Hope you have something nice planned for the four days.

This week our Numeracy, Literacy and Topic learning intentions are:
 * efficient strategies for solving addition & subtraction problems - main focus will be algorithms
 * using questions to gain deeper understanding of texts
* understanding the importance of verbs in sentences and reviewing use of question marks
 * finding out about the world of work - increasing their knowledge of work opportunities and skills in demand.

I will be ringing everyone this week to find out who still needs a work placement for Week 7. Many thanks for your support with this. The students are really looking forward to this authentic learning experience.

Part of this week and next week's homework is preparation for the Mask Parade at the beginning of Term 4. Now that might sound like a long way off but experience has shown us that it takes a long time for students to go through the process of making a mask, choreographing moves and composing a ‘sound track’ for the occasion. The first step in this process is to get the students to have a say in what the masks might look like. The staff will then select a design that fits the criteria - able to be assembled by 5 - 12 year olds, can be made within timeframe available, exciting eye catching design, has good visibility when worn and is comfortable to wear for an hour or so. This will enable us to order the materials prior to Term 3, the term that the masks will be made, ready for Week 1, Term 4. They will have 2 weeks to plan and make a prototype of a mask to be entered for consideration for our school entry in the Nelson Mask Parade.

A big thank you to all the parents who used our poll to indicate whether their child is eating their lunch. It appears that most students are eating their lunch all the time - 76% of those who responded. Remember you can still write a comment in the homework diaries if you are concerned about the lunch issue.

Mask Parade - Planning ahead, have your say
Time to get the creative thinking cranked up! Week 5 and 6 will be a time for you to research, plan and create a prototype of a mask for the Mapua School entry into the Nelson Masked Parade.
Your first step is to read through the brief and plan sheet.
Think about how the themes might be interpreted - ideas, shapes, colours???
Second step is to check out books and websites for ideas.
Thirdly complete the planning sheet.
And the last stage is to make a prototype to show us clearly what your plan is all about.

Book Fair!!

On the 15 th of May 2009 the book characters came to life- Alice in Wonderland, Inspector Gadget, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan etc. The best were awarded best dressed in the House groups after lunch.

We paraded around the big tree afterwards and our good friend Barney came to visit!!!!! It is funny but that day our principal, Mr Chalmers, went missing.

Then all the book characters headed back to their pages, and here they are!!!!

The Book Fair last week was very successful and will allow the library team to choose a lot of new books for our school. It was great to see so many students once again letting their creativity take flight and dressing up as a book character. Friday definitely had a carnival atmosphere as everyone paraded around in their costumes, vying for the prizes on offer.

Another buzz for me last week was coaching the Y7 miniball team and watching them pushing themselves to be all they could at the Friday night game. The result was an exciting game which ended in a draw. Good team spirit and fair play all the way.
We have allowed the intermediate students have their lunch in the classroom or on the deck as a special privilege. Some people think that the students are skipping their lunch so that they can get out to play earlier. Parents, we need your feedback. Please vote on the poll on our blog, leave a comment or email me to indicate whether your son or daughter is eating their lunch or whether they are bringing it home uneaten.
This week we are extending our skills and knowledge of: -  addition; questioning to deepen our understanding of what we read; writing to persuade; writing a CV; Spanish greetings and winter sports. Special event this week is a soccer coaching session on Tuesday.
A big thank you to all the parents who have managed to get work placements for their child. For those who have not had any luck, I will be working on getting suitable work experience for those requiring it.

Persuasion is all around you. You might be surprised how many people and businesses are trying to convince you to do things every day.
Find a persuasive piece in the newspaper or a magazine to bring to share at school. It can be an article, advert, letter to the editor, a movie or book review or another piece that is trying to persuade you in some way.
Be prepared to answer these questions: -
Who is trying to persuade you?
What are they trying to persuade you to do?
Is their argument convincing? Why or why not?

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers
Last week was a very busy week. Added to the usual classroom programme were Assembly preparations, basketball practises and the Wetlands programme but we made it and had a lot of fun along the way.

After all the preparations, making the call on Friday morning and cancelling the outdoor assembly was a hard one. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your view point!) the weather was the opposite to what was predicted on the weather forecast at 8 am Friday. Never mind. Can’t win them all. The students preparations were not in vain as they put on the Assembly for the Senior Syndicate in the staffroom.

Thanks for your support with the electronic communications. It worked well last week and we only had to photocopy 6 copies of the news and home tasks. A big thank you to Matt, Sarah and Judy for adding your views to the debate about the difference between a job and a career. Hope you all enjoyed the sweet treat : )

Remember to think of an analogy or metaphor for the help line then think of a short catchy slogan to go with the image. practise your design ideas on a ordinary piece of paper first. Wetlands

Today's Friday and we are excited because it is our first visit to the Mapua Wetlands Project. Here we come to have some fun in the sunny sun! This session is going to be our safety and orientation session. We are going to be learning about the Wetlands and helping to develop and conserve the environment every second Friday afternoon for the next two terms. Another great weekend in paradise. What a fabulous place to live.
Mad Hair day was a huge success. The students had a lot of fun giving my hair a bit of a makeover!

In this day and age of electronic communication it is kind of ironic that we still print mountains of paper. At school our photocopy budget has been blown and we are now using Term 3’s supplies! To help alleviate this problem I am now going to put all news and home work tasks on our class blog. there will be a hard copy on display in the class, one in the folder at the Office and any parents who do not have ready access to a computer will also be given a hard copy.
Could you please email me or ring me if you have any problems with this arrangement.

The students are really interested in the Careers unit. We had a discussion around what is a career and what is a job and would like input from you on the class blog. Could you type a comment stating what you think is the difference (if any) between a job and a career.

This term we are looking at careers!! It is going to be quite cool working somewhere for a day.
So far we have looked at some of the worst jobs! Imagine doing this for a living.

We are starting to look at what skills and personality traits you need for different jobs. We are also trying to define and work out what the difference between a career and a job is and we are wondering if you could help us by leaving a comment telling us what you think the difference is.

Kia ora
I had a relaxing time catching up with family members down in Balclutha and had stopovers at Wanaka, Fox and Greymouth on the way home. It was great to have glorious autumnal weather (and colours) for most of the trip but of course it rained as we drove through the Haast. I don’t think I have ever managed to drive through there when the sun is shining. It didn’t matter though as the rivers and waterfalls were magnificent. I hope you all had a great time with your families over the two week break. As always I am looking forward to hearing the news from the children over the next day or two.

Camp Totaranui

Can you imagine going to Camp Totaranui and having the best week ever with a buddy of your choice? Well keep dreaming buddy, it is possible.
And here is the proof.

We had parents who gave the best hugs (not to mention anyone - Sandy - wink, wink, nudge, nudge). We loved the whole week, from the boat trip where we got to see seals to the time we got back and got welcome home hugs from our parents.

Challenges were fun and interesting. We faced our fears and conquered them on the Separation Point walk or the 15m rock face we abseiled down.
Fire drill at 7 am in the morning and the banging of pots and pans were horrific but were a great way to get us up because the rest of the days were full of action.

The swimming was fun and a great thing to do after a long walk and had well been deserved but then took its turn to burden us with a cold in the weekend well at least some of us were unlucky to get the bug.

Hey, we're back for 2009. A new year, new room, new mix of students, new stationery all clean and fresh and a new blog address!
The first couple of weeks have been really great with everyone happy to be back with friends and new challenges. Keep checking back here to find out what we've been up to or to add your thoughts and opinions about the issues we are learning about and ideas we come up with.
